Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology uses custom made contact lenses worn overnight, resulting in clear vision during the day without needing to wear glasses or contact lenses!

What is Orthokeratology

Orthokeratology is a great non-surgical option for those with short-sightedness interested in an alternative to glasses or traditional contact lenses. Ortho-K is a common treatment for myopia management, to help slow the progression of short-sightedness.

How does Orthokeratology work?

During your sleep, the custom made contact lens gently reshapes the front surface of the eye (cornea).

This reduces myopia (short-sightedness), hyperopia (long-sightedness) or astigmatism so that you won’t have to wear glasses or contact lenses during the day. Ortho-K is completely reversible – the cornea will return to its normal shape and the vision will return to its original state in approximately a week of discontinuing lens wear.

Is it safe?

  • The lens materials available today for Ortho-K exceed even soft contact lenses for providing the eye with the oxygen necessary for healthy vision.
  • If properly handled and good hygiene is maintained, Ortho-K lenses do not pose any extra risk compared to a normal soft contact lens.
  • There is no minimum age for a child to wear these lenses, as long as contact lens care procedures are followed with or without adult supervision.

Does it really stop me from getting more short-sighted?

According to current research, patients with orthokeratology treatment progressed at about 50% of the rate compared to spectacle wearers on average. However, results may vary from person to person as each individual responds differently. At your initial assessment, your optometrist will be able to discuss your suitability and the likely effectiveness of Ortho-K treatment.
